Reggaeton is a modern electronic music genre that originated in Panama in the late 1980s and became popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s through Puerto Rican artists. The word "reggaeton" comes from Jamaican reggae and the Spanish suffix "-tón". Reggaeton is influenced by many genres, including Jamaican reggae, hip-hop, Jamaican dancehall, bomba, and plena music. Reggaeton songs often have lyrics that provide a window into Puerto Rican or other Latin American cultures, and often use local slang, colloquialisms, and curse words.
